Webex is a cloud-based messenger and team collaboration app from Cisco Systems. Here we have internal communication about any events, administrative and scientific discussions. To make an account on Webex, please follow the instructions on the RWTH IT help page - creating your Webex account. You can either download the Webex app or use the browser. For more information please use the Webex help resources.
Once you create your Webex account, please contact the responsible IT person to add your account to the GIM team in Webex.
Our GIM team has 5 channels. Generally, you have to join the channels. If more channels are created you can join these at any time.
In this channel, there are general announcements that are relevant to the entire scientific and administrative team. It is also the appropriate place to communicate achievements, upcoming events, or updates.
This channel is dedicated to the scientific team. Here we can share any relevant publications, reviews or upcoming seminars. Here is where we can also communicate about the upcoming scientific GIMposiums.
This channel is essential for maintaining communication between HiWi team members and the rest of the teams regarding HiWi contracts and current work tasks. It’s also the place to find updates on HiWi meetings.
As mentioned in resources, pyGIMLi is used by many of our employees and students. Although it is not necessary to join this channel, it is recommended in order to get updates on new releases and relevant publications. It is also the place to ask certain questions before asking the external pyGIMLi team.
We usually have lunch as a team once a week after the GIMposium. This is the place where we share lunch plans in case you would like to join.
Although RWTH does provide a Zoom account, this is only for teaching purposes. For all other online meetings, please host and create the meeting using Webex.
This is a bi-weekly and internal meeting obligatory for all staff scientists and strongly recommended for Bachelor and Master students. The idea is that we discuss our research progress (including open questions and current challenges) in an informal manner. This is also a good place to discuss interesting papers we found, plan conference contributions, and exchange experiences in the use of helpful tools. The GIMposium is followed by an (optional) lunch.
This meeting is for staff scientists only and usually not interesting for students working on their theses. Others are invited on demand if necessary for certain discussion points. This is also a bi-weekly meeting that alternates with the scientific GIMposium.
Together with the Chair of Computational Geoscience, Geothermics and Reservoir Geophysics of Prof. Florian Wellmann (www.cg3.rwth-aachen.de), we host a weekly seminar during the semester with presentations (usually 20-30 minutes + discussion) in the field of geophysics and computational geoscience. Everyone is strongly recommended to attend and should present their own research at least once. This is a bit more formal than our internal meeting, but still a "safe place", i.e. a good opportunity to practice your presentation skill before going to scientific conferences.
If you are a PhD student, PostDoc or Master student working under a project and if you have regular project meetings, please keep the GIM team up to date on the activities and if it is neccesary for any other GIM member to attend.
Our division hosts a few "Rock Talks" per semester, which is a division-wide seminar where many non-geophysicists and students are present. The topics are therefore broad and usually on a more general level compared to our geophysical seminar. There are usually drinks and interesting dicussions after the Rock Talks. Participation is strongly recommended.
GIM members are encouraged to participate in the annual GeoTag event, which is hosted by various departments and features a wide range of themes each year. The event includes a poster session for Master's students, with a cash prize awarded for the best poster. For more information about upcoming and past GeoTag events: GeoTag event page
RWTH also hosts an annual Science Night, providing a good opportunity to showcase research and science to the general public and citizens of Aachen. In previous years, the GIM has participated by presenting experiments and presentations.
Barbarafeier is a fun event to attend, the faculty usually hosts a party as well as a performance from Professors as tradition.
The ABC/J Sommerfest is hosted in (Aachen/Bonn/Cologne/Julich) and also provides a fun environment for social party to kick-off the summer.
For the entire calendar of events of the Faculty, please visit Division of Earth Sciences and Geography - events
If you are a researcher or part of the technical staff you will have a GIM E-mail account with the following domain: @gim.rwth-aachen.de. This is a separate E-mail account from your student or employee @rwth-aachen.de and it the preffered account for internal and external communication.
In order to get your account with prefered name, please contact responsible IT person.
It is highly recommended to get a public key certificate for digital signatures in PDF files and for signing and potentially encrypting e-mails. Public Key Certificates, as defined by the X.509 standard, are digital documents that verify the ownership of a public key by associating it with an entity such as a person or organization. They are issued by trusted Certificate Authorities (CAs) and play a crucial role in securing communications over networks by enabling encryption and authentication. Please follow the instructions by the RWTH ITC to obtain a certificate.

You will have a personal calendar that you can access via the rwth-aachen web or a preferred mail client system (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.). This should contain your personal events and meetings.
The GIM calendar contains all the institute events and meetings.
This is updated regularly, so it is very important to get access at the beginning of your time at the GIM. To get access, please contact responsible IT person. If you want to add events to this calendar, you should first create the event in your personal calendar and then invite calendar@gim.rwth-aachen.de.
